Why a New Financial Information System?
DaFIS Transaction Processing (TP) began as an early client/server application designed for Indiana University in the early 1990’s using text-based Uniface 5. The DaFIS TP application and its underlying Uniface language have been upgraded several times including the addition of a Graphical User Interface (GUI) before UC Davis implemented TP. The Web-based DaFIS Decision Support (DS) application and the batch General Ledger (GL) processes continue to be stable and robust, but the underlying architecture of TP has been problematic.
The reasons for moving DaFIS TP off of its current architecture include:
- Uncertainties surrounding the long-term sustainability of the software.
- The TP client/server deployment results in adverse impact on the user’s desktop and it is unstable at times.
- System design is difficult to enhance in some areas and the DaFIS development team has been unsuccessful in addressing the large number of outstanding system enhancement requests. In some cases, these requests represent substantial gaps in functionality.
Why KFS?
The Kuali Financial System (KFS) is based upon the same financial system from which DaFIS was created. That means that the general structure, including the chart of accounts, is the same as our system. Kuali also has the same modules, plus additional functionality not found in our system. All of this will make the transition to Kuali easier than it would be with another system.
